What is Biopsychosocial Approach in Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy

During your first visit at CantaCore, our physiotherapists will ask you questions such as:

  • " How stressful is your job?"

  • "Do you sleep well?"

  • "Is there any stress at home?"

  • "How worried are you about your injury?"

You may be wondering "why is my physiotherapist asking me this? Or "How is this important for my sore knees/back/shoulders pain?"

The answer to this is the biopsychosocial approach used by our physiotherapists. In other words, our physiotherapists help you to achieve optimum health by offering you treatment options that make a noticeable difference to one's lifestyle. We strongly agree with the World Health Organisation, which states: "Health is a positive concept that emphasises social and personal resources as well as physical capabilities." ( Otttawa Charter for Health Promotion, WHO, 1986)

What is Biopsychosocial Approach in Physiotherapy?

The biopsychosocial approach systematically considers biological, psychological, and social factors and their complex interactions in understanding health, illness, and health care delivery.

  • Bio meaning physiological pathology.

  • Psycho meaing thoughts, emotions and behaviours such as psychological distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods and attribution.

  • Social meaning socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors such as work issues, family circumstances and benefits/economics.

Biopsychosocial Approach

This approach is not a new concept. The biopsychosocial model of health and illness proposed by Engel in 1977. The model implies that behaviours, thoughts and emotions may influence physical states. This means that psychological and social factors influence biological functioning and play a role in health and disease.

This theoretical model was therefore developed in an attempt to improve medicine's approach to illness and its narrow view of health and disease, so that health and disease are not just biological factors but also the psychological and social ones are seen as worthy of study and practice.

At Cantacor, we use the biopsychosocial approach in our therapy practice. This means that during our consultations, we will want to look at not only the pain within your body but also the contxt in which this pain appears.

Because the physiotherapist at CantaCore apply a biopsychosocial approach to clinical practice, we can:

  • Recognise that relationships are central to the delivery of health care.

  • Use self-awareness as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool.

  • Understand the patient's medical history in the context of their daily life.

  • Decide which aspects of the biological, psychological and social domains are most important in understanding and promoting the health of the patient.

  • Provide a multi-faceted and holistic approach to treatment.

When we are stressed, our bodies release stress hormones, the main of which is cortisol. Continued elevated levels of cortisol do not allow our body's tissues to heal properly, it causes elevated levels of inflammation and weakens our immune system, all of which makes us more vulnerable to injury.

Therefore, obtaining the essentially optimal state of health, with its intense emphasis on personal control over our own bodies and health, can be difficult and confusing for people with chronic illnesses or those who struggle in vain with their weight, smoking or drinking habits.

At CantaCore, however, a personalised service will be offered to deal with the sensitive aspects of a patient's daily life. Under the expert guidance of a physiotherapist, we will help you reach optimal health and wellness by addressing any imbalances or issues that may be affecting your overall health.
